Jiufen is the name of our first destination, which literally means
‘nine portions,’ representing
the nine families who lived here in the early
Qing Dynasty. The Taiwanese
revere the place as the setting for the film
‘A City of Sadness,’ which deals with
the massacre of tens of thousands of Taiwanese and
newcomers by Kuomintang troops.
The Japanese, on the other hand, Japanese visitors, on the other hand,
like to make a pilgrimage to a teahouse that,
according to a long-disproved rumour,
inspired the anime star director Hayao Mi-
yazaki for his film "Chi-
hiro's Journey to the Magic Land".
